Frequently Asked Questions: Water Quality After Fires
Is our water safe to drink?
Yes, our water is safe to drink. We know this because we routinely sample water in our systems to confirm that it meets all state and federal drinking water standards. Samples taken during the fire and since have continued to meet all drinking water standards. Historically, we’ve met or surpassed all water quality standards; our water quality reports are available online at www.hawaiiwaterservice.com/waterquality. At Hawaii Water Service, we are committed to delivering safe, clean drinking water, 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year.
Where does Hawaii Water Service get its water from for customers?
Our water supply comes from groundwater in areas where there were no fires. In those areas, our reservoirs are enclosed, meaning water is not exposed to open air. Our nearest water system was over two miles away, upwind, from the Lahaina Fire.
Is water unsafe to drink after a fire?
After a major fire, the main potential source of contamination for drinking water systems is from PVC distribution lines in areas that have burned. Our water distribution lines are not made of PVC; they’re made of ductile iron or transite. Additionally, our lines were not in areas that burned.
Are you doing any other sampling to make sure our water is safe?
Yes. Although we know that our water meets all state and federal drinking water standards, out of an abundance of caution, we are conducting additional testing for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that evaporate easily and can enter the atmosphere or water.
How will we know if our water ever becomes unsafe to drink?
We immediately notify our customers about water quality issues in accordance with state and federal regulations. Depending on the situation, we will notify customers in person, by phone/text, and by e-mail. We also post all water quality alerts and annual reports on this web site.
West Maui Update: Conservation Lifted for Ka’anapali Customers
Update: Our systems have stabilized on grid power, and we are canceling the emergency conservation request for our Ka’anapali customers. You may resume normal water use. We will continue to monitor the system and reach out if any conservation measures need to be reinstated. Conservation measures are still in place in Kapalua, as we continue to operate that system on generator power.
Thank you for your cooperation as we worked to keep our system operational on generator power and then ensure it remained stable on grid power. We continue to keep all those affected by this tragedy in our hearts.

Our hearts remain with all those who have been affected by the devastating fires, and we thank you for your efforts to conserve water as our water systems were operating on generator power. While part of our systems begins to return to electric utility power, we ask that you continue to conserve water, particularly by limiting irrigation, until further notice, as a portion of our systems remains on generator power. We are also working to ensure that the portion of our systems back on grid power continues to operate properly.
Just as a reminder, your water remains safe to use and drink. Our Ka’anapali and Kapalua systems are NOT under any boil water advisory or do-not-drink order.
We will let you know when our systems are fully back and stabilized on grid power, and you can resume normal water use. For more information, watch this page for updates.

We understand that there is confusion about which water systems are under a boil water advisory or do-not-drink order. Hawaii Water Service customers in our Ka’anapali and Kapalua systems are NOT under any boil water advisory or do-not-drink order. Water for our customers remains safe to use and drink.
If you have any questions, please contact us at (808) 883-2046, toll-free (877) 886-7784, or customerservice@hawaiiwaterservice.com. Our hearts are heavy for everyone impacted by these devastating fires, and our thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected.
August 11, 2023
Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected by the devastating wildfires that have hit Lahaina and other parts of Maui, and our hearts break for all those lost and impacted. If you are in need of assistance, Maui County has set up a distribution center at the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua and multiple evacuation centers in Wailuku, Pukalani, and Kahului.
We’d like to take a moment to provide a water system update. There is currently no boil water advisory or do-not-drink order for any Hawaii Water Service customers. Please be assured that water in our service areas remains safe to use and drink, as we have not experienced any system outages. Our Maui crews continue working to operate the water system to keep water flowing to you. If any issues with the water system arises, we will notify our Ka’anapali and Kapalua customers directly.
We ask that Hawaii Water Service customers and visitors in the Ka’anapali and Kapalua areas continue to conserve water as much as possible, with our systems still running on generator power (which relies on limited fuel supplies). Turning off irrigation systems and limiting indoor use will help prevent water service interruptions due to the widespread power outage. We want to clarify that we are not turning off water service, we just ask you to conserve.
If you have any questions, please contact us at (808) 883-2046, toll-free (877) 886-7784, or customerservice@hawaiiwaterservice.com.
As we come together to support those affected by the fires, including our own team members, we invite you to join us in contributing to the Maui Strong Fund established by the Hawaii Community Foundation. Donations of non-perishable food, bottled water, hygiene items, clothing/slippers, blankets/pillows, and storage containers/duffel bags are also being accepted at the War Memorial Complex.

Due to the devastating fires currently impacting Maui and the widespread power outage, we are asking our Ka’anapali and Kapalua customers to please conserve water as much as possible until further notice. Please turn off irrigation systems and use only as much water as absolutely needed indoors for health and safety purposes.
Our water system is currently operating on generator power, which will require limited diesel supplies to keep functioning. Your conservation efforts will help reduce the possibility of any water service outages.
We will update you when you can resume normal water use. Thank you for your cooperation, and please stay safe. Our hearts and thoughts go out to all those who are currently affected by the fire.
Kapalua water conservation notice update
Hawaii Water Service & Maui Land & Pineapple has started a much-needed non-potable water storage reservoir liner replacement project in Kapalua. This project was started in late April 2023 and is expected to be completed in August 2023. During the project duration, our ability to store water for our non-potable system is reduced.
Drought conditions have improved since early 2023 and has been downgraded from D2 (severe drought) to D0 (abnormally dry) in Q2 2023. Although the conditions for water supply has improved, we anticipate that during the estimated 3 months of the liner project, our ability to store water in the event of severe drought conditions is reduced.
The source water supply in West Maui remains severely limited as we must also meet our state-required Intermittent In-stream Flow Standards (IIFS) of 13.4 CFS in the Honokohau stream and support Maui County’s Mahinahina Water Treatment Plant, which provides essential water for domestic use to West Maui and shares its source water with Kapalua non-potable water system.
As we continue to prioritize the Maui County Water Treatment Plant for potable, domestic water use, we are urging our Kapalua non-potable water customers to continue to conserve water as much as possible to allow the Kapalua non-potable water storage reservoirs to sustain safe storage levels.
To assist with these conservation efforts, we ask that you also report any water leaks to our customer service team at (808) 883-2046 or toll-free (877) 886-7784. Also, please be sure to turn off your irrigation system for 48 hours after rainfall and eliminate all other outdoor water use unless absolutely necessary for health and safety.
We will continue to partner with both residential and commercial customers, including resorts, golf courses, and restaurants, to help ensure we continue to have a reliable supply of water—potable and non-potable)—both now and for years to come. Mahalo for your cooperation.

Despite the improved drought conditions, which transitioned from D2 (severe drought) to D0 (abnormally dry) in late 2022, the source water supply in West Maui has not fully recovered. Additionally, we must meet state-required Intermittent In-stream Flow Standards (IIFS) of 13.4 CFS in the Honokohau stream and support Maui County’s Mahinahina Water Treatment Plant, which provides essential water for domestic use to West Maui and shares its source water with Kapalua non-potable water system. That system is now approaching critically low water levels.
As we continue to prioritize the Maui County Water Treatment Plant for potable, domestic water use, we are urging our Kapalua non-potable water customers to conserve water as much as possible to allow the non-potable water storage reservoirs to sustain safe storage levels and recover when water becomes available.
