Waikoloa: Mandatory water conservation advisory

Important water conservation request for our Waikoloa customers:

Hawaii Water is implementing a mandatory conservation advisory for all Waikoloa customers to reduce non-essential water use by 25%, as we work through significant repairs to 4 of our 8 groundwater wells. We expect this conservation notice to last about 2-3 months. Please also remember to water only between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m., when there is less evaporation, and turn off irrigation systems entirely when it rains and for 48 hours afterward.

Several of the deep wells that supply water to the Waikoloa community are currently out of service due to equipment malfunctions. These wells are essential components of our water system and operate at depths of approximately 1,300 feet below ground, requiring specialized pumps and equipment to produce water for the community. Repairing and replacing this equipment is a complex process. The specialized components required for these deep well systems currently have extended manufacturing and delivery timelines, due to ongoing supply chain and production constraints.

Our operations and maintenance teams are working diligently with our suppliers and contractors to restore these wells to service as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we must implement conservation measures to help provide continued, reliable water service for all Waikoloa customers and help prevent any water service interruptions.

We ask customers to reduce discretionary water use whenever possible, including:

  • Limiting landscape irrigation.
  • Avoiding washing vehicles except when necessary.
  • Postponing pressure washing and other non-essential outdoor water use.
  • Repairing leaking faucets, irrigation systems, and toilets promptly.
  • Using water efficiently indoors.

While the system continues to meet current customer needs, conservation efforts will help preserve available supplies and maintain reliability as repair work progresses.

We recognize that this may be inconvenient, and we appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding. Your efforts will help keep service reliable for essential household and business use, and firefighters’ public safety needs. Updates will be provided as repairs progress.
